Writer's Block

They say that it is a usually temporary condition in which a writer finds it impossible to proceed with the writing of a novel, play, or other work.(according to dictionary.com that is.) But if you're a writer, you'll know the pain that comes mentally when you're not able to pour stuff out on paper!

I mean imagine, due to lack of time, ideas, imaginations or even interest, we stop our minds from expressing ourselves. We tend to push ourselves mentally so as to pour out our ideas so as to be able to write before the deadline. Else, you may get kicked out! People who're suffering from writer's block are often subject to chiding, and being told that they're making excuses! That's the quotidian response, you see?

But do you know what's worse? It could last up to a couple of years! According to Wikipedia, it may be due to "running out of inspiration, being distracted by other events or the adverse circumstances in a writer's life or career: depression, the end of a relationship, financial pressures or a source of failure." It could also be due to pressure to produce work, the feeling that our work NEEDS to be perfect AND feeling intimidated by one's previous big successes. Ouch!

Yes, it all seems insurmountable in the beginning. But, awareness must be brought about. To quote from my experience, I'd found it difficult in the beginning to even pour out a couplet that made sense, and I had to submit an article by Sunday, so meeting the deadline was difficult. Had there not been any responsibilities assigned to other writers in the blog that moment, time would've been like Cruella de Vil to me.

For this, I thank God for His blessings and His strength, my family for their love and understanding, my colleagues at iyouthmag.com , especially Siddharth, for giving me time to help me get over writer's block for now and last but not the least, my creative arts team in my college for being there. :)

So, for those who have a problem with writer's block, do take away from this post that:

  • It's natural.
  • It can happen to us writers once in a while.
  • Don't worry. Your past works could provide you the inspiration you need.
  • Don't forget that you're letting your thoughts flow through words, and that's an innate quality in you that shouldn't die. :)
  • Do anything that's creative, or even better, listen to music.
  • Whenever you get time, learn new words and their meanings, make sample sentences with them and form short stories. That could do the trick!
  • If you could, write about whatever you're thinking at that particular moment. Freewriting is very helpful. For more information, go to http://www.wikihow.com/Freewrite
Happy Reading. :)
