A TRIP TO DARJEELING


Durga Puja, the most famous and grand festival of the Bengali Hindus in the Indian subcontinent which is celebrated for four to five days, is the time for most of us to go out for a relaxing holiday, isn’t it? If you are planning for a short trip, Darjeeling would be the perfect place! The enthralling and the pleasant atmosphere along with the warm welcome from the natives will surely win your heart. 



The name Darjeeling comes from the Tibetan word dorje, meaning the thunderbolt scepter of the Hindu deity Indra, and ling, a place or land. Darjeeling is a beautiful place in West Bengal. It can be a perfect holiday with your family because you will get all the elements of beauty over here. The toy train and the tea gardens are the main attractions.



HOW TO GO:
1.       By plane
The nearest airport is Bagdogra, near Siliguri , 96 km from Darjeeling.  Bagdogra Airport is 2.5 hours by road from Darjeeling and 2 hours by air from Delhi, and 50 minutes by air from Kolkata.
Air India, Spice Jet, Jet Airways, Indigo,Go Air are some of the major flights.

2.       By bus
There is a regular bus service from Siliguri to Darjeeling. However, these buses are quite slow due to the steep, twisty climb up to Darjeeling. Shared jeeps are faster, but the cost is double.

3.       By train
The nearest railway station to Darjeeling is New Jalpaiguri which connects the city with all the major parts of the country. There are a number of trains from several major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar and Kochi.
From there (NJP), the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), known to all as the 'Toy Train' completes the journey to Darjeeling. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was the first, and is still the most outstanding example of a hill passenger railway. It is one of the major attractions in Darjeeling. People of all ages have this wish to ride in a Toy Train. 

The steam 'Joy' train operates from Darjeeling to Ghoom round the famous Batasia Loop, four times a day – enquire at Darjeeling station. The average costs are Indian rupee 400.


PLACES TO VISIT:


KANCHENJUNGA: Kanchenjunga is the second highest mountain of the Himalayas after Mount Everest. Three of the five peaks – Main, Central and South – are on the border between North Sikkim and Nepal. Two peaks are in the Taplejung District, Nepal. You can experience the sight of snowcapped peaks from Darjeeling. The view is truly amazing!


TIGER HILL: The Tiger Hill is located in Darjeeling. People go to this hill to see the beautiful sunrise. At sunrise, the peaks of Kanchenjunga are illuminated before the sun is seen at lower elevations. It has a panoramic view of Mount Everest and Mt. Kanchenjunga together. You can take a jeep to visit Tiger Hill.



TEA GARDENS: You can see a lush green area filled with tea plants. The tea leaves are picked by the females because one needs to be very soft and careful while picking up tea leaves. Several varieties of tea are available over here. Tea addicts would love this place and others must visit for the exceptional beauty of the big tea gardens.



TOY TRAIN: Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the Toy Train is a main attraction of this place. The journey will definitely will a memorable one! Most of the original steam locomotives are still in use. It is famous for its authenticity.



MIRIK: If you go to Darjeeling, Mirik should be visited due to its natural beauty and pleasant climate. The centre of all attraction is the SamenduLake, surrounded by a garden on one side and pine trees on the other and linked together by an arching footbridge. This place should definitely be visited.
